Portraits & stories of merchants from the market.

ENDEL POLLI

“I came to the Central Market nearly 40 years ago because there was no outlet for the pigs I was raising. Back then, there weren’t even market buildings – we had to stand in the cold to sell. Over time, it became not just a job, but a lifestyle and a steady source of income.

90% of the goods at my stall come directly from small Estonian producers – that means freshness and quality I proudly stand by. New stock arrives every Thursday, and by Sunday it's usually all sold out. Those who appreciate good products always find their way to me.

There have been many heartwarming moments, but one of the most touching was when an elderly woman, nearly 100 years old, praised the meat she bought and brought me a chocolate bar as thanks. It moved me to the core.

The market is truly a good place – and customers, make it all possible!”

RITAPROKHOROVA

“I've been in commerce since the age of 16 and even have a formal education in the field – it’s my true calling. I’ve been officially working at the Central Market for 23 years, since 2002. It’s not just a job, it’s a way of life!

What I love most about the market is that I can offer authentic Estonian produce grown in my own summer garden. In the summer, my husband and I go foraging in the forest – we pick mushrooms, berries, sorrel, and wild garlic. For our family, it’s important that food is real.

Many buyers have become loyal customers over the years. In summer, I trade in the outdoor market where, in addition to company goods, I sell my own homemade preserves – pickles, jam, dried mushrooms, and adjika. Products you won’t find in a store. And it's such a joy when someone says, “I came just for your preserves!” – that gives me strength and inspires me to create new flavors.“

AIVAR MEHERVITS

“My journey to the market began somewhat by chance in 2014 – someone left, a good spot opened up, and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. That was the beginning of what is now my job and source of income. My stall is like a small treasure chest – something for every taste and need: underwear, shirts, socks, yarns, and much more.

The greatest joy is hearing someone say: “I know I can always get exactly what I need here.”

Those moments make all the work worthwhile.

ANTONINA ANISSIMOVA

“Our family business started in the early '90s – and I’ve now been running it with heart and soul for 16 years. Every day at the market is exciting, and that’s exactly what makes my work so special.

At my stall, you’ll find only the best Estonian honey. I work with trustworthy beekeepers whose honesty and craftsmanship are worth their weight in gold: Ardi from Northern Pärnumaa, the enterprising Toomas from Järvamaa, the legendary August from Pärnu – whose heather honey fans never waver – and Mario from Võrumaa, whose South Estonian honey needs no introduction – it simply tastes amazing!

What makes my stall special? Every customer matters to me. I ask, listen, and advise – that way we find the perfect jar of honey together.“

ANZELA BEZPÁLYKO

“Over ten years ago, I came to the Central Market with my business partner – and I fell in love!

From that moment on, the Central Market has been a part of my life and heart. My stall stands out with a carefully curated and exclusive selection of vegetables and fruits. I place great emphasis on service, and it’s a joy to see customers returning again and again.

Children are especially dear to me. Some of them run straight to me when they come to the market – that’s the most sincere and heartwarming.”
